You may be thinking, should I leave my cable company and get Satellite TV instead?
If you have cable, it’s likely that you are bombarded with commercial after commercial from your cable company, telling you why cable TV is better than Satellite TV.
Of course they would say that… They’re worried about losing customers.
The cable company says that with Satellite TV your service will go out often… What they don’t tell you is that if you have cable TV, then you already have satellite TV.
Cable companies use satellite dishes to get the television programming, that they then refer to as “cable channels” because they send it from their office, to your home, through a cable.
Cable companies use a big antenna to get the local channels right out of the air, just like the antennas you might see on an older house.
Major television networks upload their programming to satellites in space, where they are then downloaded by local network affiliates, who then broadcast the programming through the air, to be picked up by antennas on peoples homes and cable company antennas. Satellite TV companies cut out the middleman and pick up the signal coming from the satellites.
Other networks, that the cable companies refer to as "cable channels", also broadcast to the satellites in space, and then the programming is downloaded to the cable company's dishes, as well as to the direct digital dishes on people homes.
Out in the country you will find remnants of big old satellite dishes that they used to use to get television service for their homes. This type of satellite dish is referred to as a c-band. C-band is a type of analog signal; these dishes are not capable of receiving a digital signal.
On most of these houses, if you look closely, you will find that they also have a new small digital dish that replaces there old dish. They still get the programming directly friom the satellitesd but now with much better picture. Bigger does not always mean better.
Take, for example, the VHS cassette tape versus the DVD. VHS cassette tapes record and play in analog, whereas a DVD is digital. Digital has a far better picture and of course much better sound too.
Now one of the most frequently asked questions is; will I get all of my channels? The answer is, YES, you will get all of the channels that you get now, plus many channels that your cable company does not offer.
You basically have three different types of channels. There are those channels that you probably refer to as cable channels now. These are the non local networks, which are funded by the commercials that they show. These channels that show commercials want every house in the country to watch their shows so that they can charge more money for their commercial air time. While cable companies carry many of these channels, Satellite TV carries all of these channels.
Then there are movie channels that do not show commercials and instead they charge for access to these channels. These channels want every house in the country to subscribe and pay for their channels. And again, while cable companies carry many of these movie channels, Satellite TV carries all of these movie channels.
Finally we have the new High Definition channels. Cable television companies have started to offer many high definition channels but they do not offer nearly as many High Definition channels as Satellite TV does.
Oh, and let’s not forget the sports channels, Satellite TV offers far more sports channels than any cable company and far more in high definition.
Since satellite TV is not sent through miles and miles of wire to get to your home, there are virtually no restrictions on how many channels can be offered through satellite TV.
And since Satellite TV doesn’t have the cost of maintaining those miles and miles and miles and miles of wire… that the cable companies do, Satellite TV is able to charge far less even though they are giving you more.

Cable TV was great in the; 70s, 80s, and 90s, back when music was on record players and cassette tapes, and back when computers were science fiction and a cell phone was attached to your car. This is the 21st century. Now we listen to music on DVDs and MP3s, computers are in every home, and everyone has a cell phone that they can fit in their pocket. Now that we have upgraded our TVs to flat panel and High Definition, isn’t it time we upgrade our television service provider as well?
Oh, and Satellite TV is now coming out with High Definition in 3d… I kid you not.
